Our Worldfest European Country is….

Bangladesh?

Yes, you’re right.  Bangladesh is not in Europe.  It is a smallish country just east of the Indian Subcontinent.  It is a developing country and has been one of the poorest countries in the world, but it’s poverty rate has been going down rather steadily in the last 25 years, and it is full of beautiful, interesting people.  I am so looking forward to learning all about it with you!

Bangladesh has been in the news this year because of a factory that collapsed and killed over 1,100 people and injured 2,500.

We will learn all about Bangladesh’s history, geography, culture and current struggles.

8th Grade’s Top Ten

Restaurant Edition

Today’s journal topic was inspired by this article in Advertising Age: http://adage.com/article/news/mcdonald-s-1-rank-millennials/240497/

McDonald’s may be the country’s No. 1 fast-food chain and one of its most-beloved brands, but when it comes to millennials, the Golden Arches says it doesn’t even rank among the demographic’s top 10 restaurant chains.

So while McDonald’s is trying to figure out how to get the Twentysomethings back, they’re still doing okay in the teenage demo, at least according to our small sample at NLRCA.  (Interestingly, none of the students acctually ranked McDonald’s as their number one choice, but so many had it on their list–and usually fairly high up–that it racked up the most points.)

So without further ado, here are 8th grade’s top 10 restaurants:

There were more than 60 restaurants chosen by the students, including many local places that just didn’t have enough votes to make the top ten. (Although, sadly, no mention of Mrs. Edwards’s favorite, The Faded Rose.)

Have a great weekend!

Worldfest Continent

And the winner is….

Image

Europe!  In a landslide!

Today 8th grade voted on which continent they would like their Worldfest country to be picked from.  I sent in the application this afternoon, and hopefully we will know which European country we have been assigned soon.  We will then be preparing a presentation on the country to be judged at Worldfest, Friday, September 27th at War Memorial Park in Little Rock.

Will it be a famous country like these, or a more obscure one? The country will be announced on the blog–hopefully soon!

First Day

Image

What a great day!  Everyone has a locker, new books and supplies and forms to be signed and returned.

Tomorrow will be a $1 tag day.  It is a holy day, and we are planning on having Mass, although we don’t have a confirmed priest at the moment.  Mrs. Troutman is working on that right now.  Keep in mind that tag clothing should be church appropriate (collared shirt for boys, shirts tucked in, etc.).  We will hit the ground running tomorrow morning, so get plenty of sleep and have a good breakfast.

Welcome!

cardinal 8th

The first day of school is Wednesday, August 14 from 8:05-11:30.  It’s a tag day.  Thursday will be the first full day (8:05-3:15) and will also be a tag day.  Friday is the first uniform day.  All of your supplies are waiting on your desk.  I’m looking forward to starting the year with all of you!
