This is my sixteenth year teaching English and history at St. Mary’s/NLRCA. I graduated in 1994 from the University of Arkansas with a degree in English. I spent the next two years in school part-time taking education courses and completing the requirements to become a certified teacher.
There are many teachers in my family. My paternal grandmother, Marguerite Mitchell Jarrell, was an art teacher in the Austin, Texas school district for many years.
Sadly, I inherited neither her art talent nor her posture. She did pass on a love of visual arts and the desire to help students achieve their best.
My mother, Ginny Jarrell, started teaching in 1966, and is currently a third grade teacher at Highlander School in Dallas.
This will be her last year teaching, and while she is looking forward to retirement, I know it will be a bittersweet year for her.
In addition to these women, I have three aunts and two uncles who are teachers, as well as multiple cousins. My sister and dad broke the mold and started a Farmers’ Insurance agency in Dallas. Be sure and let me know if you are in need of life insurance!
When I’m not in the taupe box, I enjoy cooking and eating, watching critically acclaimed cable dramas, reading, spending time with my family and sitting on the porch.
